33 Year Old Arrested For Raping A Lunatic

LAGOS—Policemen attached to Makinde Division in
Lagos State have arrested a 33-year-old man, who
allegedly raped a mentally-deranged lady at
Oshodi area of the state.
The victim (names withheld) was said to have
been kept in an isolated room in her parents’
apartment on Alhaji Shehu close, where some
traditional doctors were administering treatment on
her.
However, penultimate Friday, the suspect, Itodo
Stephen, who lives in same building, was said to
have sneaked into the apartment and allegedly
raped the lady, when her parents had gone to
work.
However, a neighbour, who suspected Stephen’s
moves, raised the alarm when she caught him in
the act. He was then apprehended.
At the station, Stephen reportedly denied raping
her, claiming that the lady gave consent without
hesitation.
One of the victim’s relatives, who spoke with
Vanguard on condition of anonymity, said: “She
could not have put up any resistance because of
her state. If he had admitted and begged, we would
have considered settling without involving the
police. There is even a doctor’s report, which
confirmed that there was penetration.”
Police sources hinted that Stephen had been
charged before Oshodi Magistrate’s court, where
he pleaded not guilty to the offence.
He was reportedly granted N50,000 bail by
Magistrate Akeem Fashola with one surety in like
sum and remanded in Kirikiri Prison custody, until
he meets the bail conditions.
