A truck driver who attempted to run over officials
of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) during
"Operation Scorpion" in Ibadan, Oyo State, has
been jailed for three months with hard labour
without an option of fine by a mobile court sitting
at Toll Gate area of Ibadan.
This was disclosed by the state Sector
Commander, Mr Yusuff Salami, while speaking with
the Tribune Online on the continuation of the
operation which was targeted at curbing the
excesses of tanker and trailer drivers on the
nation's highways and the resultant fatal accidents
being experienced lately.
Salami said that the driver, who gave his name as
Sani Ahmed, and worked with a popular cement
company, drove the vehicle without number plates.
He added that the driver refused to stop when he
was waved down but started driving dangerously
and recklessly in order to evade arrest.
But he said that the driver was eventually stopped
at Oremeji area at the Ibadan end of the Lagos-
Ibadan expressway with the help of the police and
other motorists who pursued him.
After his arrest, the driver reportedly told FRSC
officials that he had no driver's licence and was
subsequently charged for dangerous driving,
driver's licence violation, speed violation, among
other offences.
Tribune Online learnt that the driver had been
taken to Agodi prisons.
The Sector Commander stated further that the
driver was discovered to have given fictitious
names when he was about to be checked into the
prison, as his identity card bearing Bello
Mohammed and other documents were found
hidden in his boxers
The Sector Commander also disclosed that
Operation Scorpion had been extended till Friday
by the FRSC headquarters, saying that 111 traffic
offenders had been arrested at the Ibadan end of
the Lagos-Ibadan expressway for 174 various
offences ranging from dangerous driving, driver's
licence violation to overloading.
