The Commissioner for Health in Akwa Ibom State, Dr. Dominic Ukpong, has warned Nigerians against patronising those who peddle drugs in the open market.
Speaking during the 2015 Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria week in Uyo on Friday, Ukpong urged pharmacists to sensitise the public on the adverse effects drugs obtained from open market may have on their systems.
The commissioner urged pharmacists in the state not to allow people who are not trained pharmacists to prescribe drugs for patients.
“We want to discourage our people from patronising such remedies as it could do more harms than good,” he said.
According to him, pharmacists are important practitioners and partners in any medical institution.
“Pharmacists should have the correct catalogue of their drugs, have expiratory dates, have the quantity that comes in and know the quantity that goes out,” Ukpong said.
He added that he expects pharmacists to even correct a doctor if he prescribed drugs wrongly.
