The Defence Headquarters has raised the alarm over the production of the national identity card by unauthorised elements in the country.
The Acting Director, Defence Information, Col. Rabe Abubakar, warned in a statement on Wednesday that acquiring the national identity card from unauthorised sources could cause serious security breaches in the society.
He, therefore, urged Nigerians to ensure that they patronised only the National Identity Management Commission, which was authorised to produce the identity cards.
He further advised the public to avoid patronising unauthorised agents as they were using the fake cards to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.
“The Nigerian military authorities have issued a red alert on the prevailing incidences of unauthorised production of the national identity cards by some unscrupulous elements in society.
“In view of the prevailing racketeering, the Defence Headquarters hereby warns members of the public to be mindful of getting their national identifications from sources other than the National Identity Management Commission as such acts of illegal reproduction of the national ID cards could engender serious security breaches in the ongoing counter insurgency operation in the North-East,” the statement read in part.
The Acting Defence Spokesman said the Boko Haram insurgents had been found to be using similar fake identity cards for their members in the past.
He explained that the national identity card produced by NIMC through laser engraved printing was unique and had 18 features, some of which were not visible to the ordinary eyes.
Abubakar said the avoidance of unauthorised agents would enable the security agencies to track and apprehend those who infiltrate the country with the intent to support the insurgents.
