The above complaint by one of your contributors published last Friday on this column is a very serious and delicate matter. The high rate of fake baby foods in the market is alarming and I wonder what agencies like the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria are doing to curb this menace. Until I realised, I fell victim on many occasions and it affected my baby. And when I enquired, the sellers made me to know that these baby foods are manufactured in Nigeria and there is a deliberate plot to sell them to the public to encourage patronage of locally-made ones. If you go to most shops, what you will see at the counters are these substandard ones and the original ones are hidden, except someone who knows about it insists on the real one.
I am not against the so-called locally produced ones, my grouse is: If truly, these products are locally-produced and they want to encourage them, as they always claim to, why will the products still carry the same brand name, the same packaging, the same colour and even the same price like the ones manufactured abroad?
They even indicate made-in-abroad on the label to make it look like the real ones. The only difference is the content, while the fake ones are whitish, the real ones are creamy. This is not a way to encourage locally-made ones. Let them indicate their own brand names and whoever wishes to patronise them will do, instead of this deceptive tendency they are putting up.
