- As advert criteria technically rules him out of race
By Gabriel Dike
Ahead of the end of tenure for the embattled Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Prof John Obafunwa, the workers have began a count down for his exit with two large banners placed at the two main gates indicating days remaining for him to leave office.
The two large banners were placed at the Main gate along the Badagry Expressway and the Iba Expressway of the university and every day the date is changed by an unknown person to reflect the number of days remaining for Prof Obafunwa’s tenure to end.
Since March 16 when Prof Obafunwa was chased out of the campus by the workers, he has not used his office till date. He has been operating from his personal office at the Lagos State University College of Medicine.
The wordings on the two banners are the same and its reads: ‘’Count down, 51 days to go: The end of evil at sight’’ an indication that the VC tenures would end on Saturday, October 31.
Investigations revealed that the two banners were placed two weeks ago and it started with 51 days to go and nobody knows who placed the banners or who changes the date every day.
The leadership of the three staff unions have distanced themselves from the banners and visitors to the university read it when they pass through the gates.
Meanwhile, the embattled VC may have been ruled out of the race for the next vice chancellor as the advert criteria states applicants must possess PhD degree.
The staff unions have consistently stated that Prof Obafunwa does not possess Masters and PhD, thus he was not qualify to hold the position. Recently ASUU President, Dr. Nasir Fagge urged his members in LASU to insist on PhD holders for the plum job.
Investigations revealed that many Professors within the system interested in the VC position are consulting colleagues and stakeholders outside the institution for support before applying for the plum job.
Among the eight criteria required from candidates for the post of VC include the possession of doctorate degree.
The selection of the new VC would be a major job for the new Governing Council members headed by Prof Bayo Ninalowo aside resolving the numerous demands of the staff unions.
