The Bayelsa State Government has declared seven days of mourning in honour of the first civilian governor of the state, Chief DiepreyeAlamieyeseigha.
Alamieyeseigha passed on last Saturday at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.
The government also directed that all flags in all public buildings and premises across the state be flown at half mast for the period, according to the Government House statement on Monday.
The government said the mourning period and the flying of the flags at half mast took effect from Monday.
It said condolence registers had been opened at the Government House, the state Secretariat Complex and Ijaw House, all in the state capital.
Meanwhile, the Bayelsa State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has described as laughable and shameful the accusation by the Peoples Democratic Party that the APC was behind the death of Alamieyeseigha.
Some groups loyal to the Seriake Dickson administration had alleged that Alamieyeseigha’s death from high blood pressure might have been due to request for his extradition to the United Kingdom, which they claimed was instigated by the APC led government.
The APC, in a statement by the state Publicity Secretary, Mr. Fortune Panebi, carpeted the PDP government in the state for its hypocrisy.
The party noted that despite claims by the Dickson administration that it had spent billions in upgrading and refurbishing medical facilities in the state, not even one hospital could attend to the late Alamieyeseigha.
