A woman, Mrs. Roseline Emaikum, has approached a Customary Court in Akure, the Ondo State capital, seeking the dissolution of her 21-year marriage to her police officer husband, Michael Amedu, an Assistant Superintendent of Police.
The 39-year-old woman alleged that her husband often beat her to coma and had threatened to kill her on several occasions.
She submitted that there was no more love in the family after her hubby had married another wife.
She told the court, “My Lord, my husband married me when I was 18 years. He always beat me; there was a day that my husband beat me to coma. He did not pay his children’s school fees; he is not a responsible man.”
According to the plaintiff, both of them jointly built four houses, after which Emaikum went ahead to marry another wife. She explained that since the coming of the new wife into the family, her husband had stopped taking care of her and the children.
Denying all the allegations, however, the police officer urged the court to ignore his wife’s prayers, saying he still loved her.
The President of the court, Mr B. E. Obateru, appealed to both parties to return home and settle their differences amicably, and adjourned the case till November 27, 2015, for a report of settlement.
