The Imo State chapter of Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria on Friday locked out the corpse of the first Speaker House of Assembly of the old Imo State Gideon Atulomah, from being taken into the assembly premises for a valedictory session.
PASAN, comprising workers of IMHA and Imo State House of Assembly Service Commission, was said to have held the corpse outside the premises for hours because the state government allegedly owed the workers six months salaries.
Speaking to our correspondent, the Chairman of IMHA PASAN, Mrs. Ngozi Ofoegbu, said the workers had been owed since May and that one of them died recently.
According to her, the reason behind barring the corpse from being taken into the assembly complex was to humiliate the hierarchy of the Assembly whom, she said, had allegedly received their salary up to September.
Though the ambulance carrying the corpse was later allowed into the premises, the workers were said to have planned disrupting the valedictory session.
Ofoegbu said they allowed the corpse in because the deceased deserved his rights of valediction as a former speaker, adding that, “more so he was not the architect of our present financial quagmire.”
Meanwhile, a member of staff of the House of Assembly who spoke on condition of anonymity said what the association was asking for had no basis.
He stated that those agitating for payment of salaries were part of a disgruntled faction and that the real PASAN members had gone back to work waiting for the state government’s white paper on the issue.
