CIBN promotes entrepreneurship

The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, Lagos Branch, has emphasised the importance of entrepreneurship to its members and growth of the economy in general.

The Chairman, Lagos Branch, CIBN, Mrs. Ige Taiwo, stated this in Lagos during a meeting on entrepreneurship organised by the Lagos branch of the institute for its members.

She enjoined the participants to seek alternative sources of income generation in order to boost their earning capabilities.

This, Ige said, could be achieved through the development of entrepreneurship skills, among other things.

She maintained that the meeting became imperative to encourage CIBN members in Lagos not to rest on their oars as the country grapples with the economic realities of the time.

The meeting had thriving entrepreneurs as facilitators and students of various higher institutions of learning as some of the participants, and was themed ‘Banking and entrepreneurship.’

Ige said, “Bankers should not only rely on their salaries, but should also have other means of generating income outside the banking jobs and should have the mind of being employers of labour.

“It is in the light of these that your branch decided that this year, we must come together as one to share experiences and proffer solutions to those challenges we might have had in the past and even those yet to be identified.

While recognising the usefulness of corporate experience for future use,

The Chief Executive Officer, Amour Global, Mrs. Ifeyemi Lokoyi, who was one of the facilitators, urged the bankers to develop a business they could fall back on, rather than spending their lifetime in the banking industry.

According to the Head, National Housing Fund, Imperial Homes Mortgage, Mr. Ugo Iwegbu, the hunt for the non-existing white-collar jobs would remain intractable until the society begins to identify and encourage talent development.
