DSS, military hunt for killers of operatives

The military and the Department of State Services have launched a joint operation to apprehend the killers of seven DSS operatives who were gunned down on September 16, 2015 by suspected vandals in Arepo area of Ikorodu, Lagos.

It was learnt that the massive operation which commenced on Saturday, and backed by aerial support from the Air Force, was meant to smoke out the murderers of the security operatives whose bodies have yet to be found.

The authorities had deployed troops and DSS personnel in Arepo community where the operatives were killed while on a random surveillance of the area.

Our correspondent had earlier reported exclusively that the military and the DSS were planning a joint operation to apprehend the vandals that attacked and killed the DSS operatives.

Two operatives who escaped the attack had briefed their superiors and gave a detailed information on the incident that led to the killing of their colleagues.

It was learnt that the leadership of the DSS had vowed to crack down and arrest the militants no matter the cost and the length of time it took.

The DSS leadership, our correspondent gathered, planned to root out all the vandals in Arepo who were believed to have entrenched themselves in the community “living above the law.”

The armed vandals had previously attacked security personnel and killed a number of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps personnel who attempted to stop their illegal activities in the area.

A source said, “The killing of the DSS operatives is the last straw and the DSS leadership has vowed to root out the killer vandals or militants in Arepo and that is why the joint operation by the service and the military was launched to eliminate the vandals and put an end to their lawlessness and mischief.”

The DSS could not be reached for comment as it had yet to appoint a spokesperson.
