A prominent Iranian revolutionary guard figure and military advisor was killed in Syria’s northern city of Aleppo, the pan-Arab al-Mayadeen TV reported on Friday.
Gen. Hossein Hamadani, an Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander who was recently serving in Syria as both an advisor to the Syrian government and as an overseer for operations of the pro-Syrian army Quds Force, was killed in Aleppo, said the report, adding that he is considered one of the most important Iranian military advisors.
The Iranian Fars News Agency said Gen. Hamadani was killed Thursday night in Aleppo countryside by a group of Islamic State militants.
Iran, the staunchest regional ally of the Syrian government, was said to have been sending military advisors and training Shiite militants to fight alongside the Syrian forces in the face of jihadi groups in the war-torn country.
