The Non-Academic Staff Union in Osun State-owned tertiary institutions has suspended its five months old strike.
The suspension of the strike action was contained in a statement made available to our correspondent by the media aide to Osun State Governor, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, in Osogbo on Tuesday.
Lecturers and NASU in Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, Osun State College of Technology, Esa Oke, Osun State Colleges of Education in Ila Orangun and Ilesa have been on strike over non-payment of their salaries and non-remittance of pension deductions from their salaries to their pension accounts.
The Chairman, Joint Negotiating Council of the NASU, Olusoji Fasipe, said the NASU decided to suspend the strike after reaching an agreement with the state government that their outstanding salaries would be paid after seven days of resumption.
He said, “We suspend this strike based on the agreement reached with government to pay our salaries within seven days of resumption. We are optimistic and we are returning to work because our governor has emphatically promised to pay our salaries within seven days.”
Governor Rauf Aregbesola, who spoke through his Chief-of-Staff, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, during the meeting with the workers, said government had no plan of merging or scrapping any state owned institutions.
