Niger Delta varsity, poorly funded – ASUU

The Zonal Coordinator, Academic Staff Union of Universities, Port Harcourt Zone, Prof. Beke Sese, has decried the poor funding of the Bayelsa State-owned Niger Delta University, Amassomma.

Sese, a former ASUU Chairman at the university and lecturer in the Faculty of Sciences, stated this in a telephone interview on Monday.

He noted that due to the poor funding, many of the programmes run by the institution had yet to obtain the National Universities Commission’s accreditation.

Sese said, “The biggest problem of the NDU is the issue of poor funding. The university is languishing under the neglect of the government in providing adequate funding.

“There is also the problem of accreditation. Some of its programmes have not received accreditation while others have partial accreditation. What the university needs is adequate funding to provide basic manpower and materials for various programmes to be able to scale through the accreditation process.

“In a nutshell, the university is not receiving the kind of funding it is supposed to receive for accreditation. We will not stop crying out until the issue is addressed.”
