A Magistrate’s Court sitting in Owo, Ondo State, has sentenced a man, Edward Odimayomi, to seven years imprisonment for raping a minor.
The 28-year-old man was charged with raping a nine-year-old girl (name withheld) at Abuja Camp in Ipele town, Owo Local Government Area of the state in September, 2014.
According to the Police Prosecutor, Mr Edu Owolabi, the offence, committed by the accused, contravened and punishable under Section 218 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37 Vol.1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.
He also prayed the court to adhere strictly with the provisions of the constitution and other relevant laws of the land to deal with the randy accused.
Odimayomi, who had initially pleaded not guilty to the allegations leveled against him, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy in its judgement.
The presiding Magistrate, Mrs Anjola Ayeni, in her judgement, said she was convinced that the accused person committed the said offence and sentenced him to seven years imprisonment with hard labour.
She said the judgment would serve as deterrent to other youths in the state who were fond of engaging in such heinous crime.
