The Pharmacists Council of Nigeria has sealed 160 medicine stores from 284 premises visited in 17 of the 31 local government areas of Akwa Ibom State.
The council sealed the stores for not meeting minimum standards for storage and personnel. They were also said to be dispensing harmful substances.
Addressing journalists on Friday, the Council’s Deputy Director and Head of Enforcement, Mr. Stephen Esumobi, said, “A total number of 284 premises were visited and 160 of them comprising five pharmacies and 155 patent medicines shops were sealed for offences ranging from dispensing poisons without the supervision of a pharmacist, poor storage conditions, selling medicines above the approved list for patent medicines, and non-registration of premises with PCN, among others.”
He explained that three premises were issued compliance directives for offences bordering on poor documentation and untidy environment, among others.
Esumobi said, “It was observed that many premises commenced operations without following laid down guidelines.
He, however, commended the level of compliance by premises in the state capital for meeting basic requirements for the practice.
Esumobi stated that the exercise was a continuous process to monitor and encourage practitioners to do the right thing.
