Warri Wolves handed Sunshine Stars a 3-0 defeat in a Nigeria Professional Football League encounter played at the Warri Township Stadium on Saturday evening.
A treble by Gbolahan Salami tamed Kennedy Boboye’s men whose chances of winning the league title for the first time ever now look very slim.
Warri Wolves started the game like a bullet from a gun. The attacks rained down on Sunshine’s backline and Salami in particular was the focal point of much of the early threat. It was the third time in two seasons that the striker would be playing against the club he once represented.
And he made the man advantage pay when, in the 42nd minute, after converting beating goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa after profiting from a pass from Joseph Osadiaye who destabilised the visitor’s rear.
On the stroke of half time, Kufre Ebong almost doubled the hosts’ lead with his brilliant effort but Ezenwa pulled of a fine save.
Paul Aigbogun’s men continued where they left off after the break but the Akure Gunners coming close twice through Tunde Adeniji and Prince Aggreh to restore parity but they failed to beat put the ball across the goal line.
In the 52nd minutes, Salami was on hand to double the advantage, tapping home at the back post after Goodluck Onamado’s moment of individual brilliance before completing his treble in the closing stages of the game to sum up the miserable evening for Sunshine.
