President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday sought more assistance from Germany in the fight against terrorism and corruption. He hosted German President Joachim Gauck at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
This wasz even as the German President warned that military might only cannot defeat Boko Haram. He spoke when he visited Senate President Bukola Saraki.
At the Villa, both leaders spoke to State House correspondents at the end of a closed-door meeting.
Gauck expressed his country’s support for the present administration’s wars against terrorism and corruption.
Gauck, who spoke through an interpreter, said he had earlier visited a camp of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Abuja and was moved by their plight.
He promised that his country would offer support to the Federal Government where necessary to ameliorate their plights. He invited Buhari to visit Germany.
He said, “You (Buhari) personally have made it clear that it is in a determined way that you intend to fight Boko Haram and insurgents’s methods that deeply violate the principles of humanity.
“We intend to support you because we believe that it is a very good approach that you have chosen and that is something we would make available financial support and this approach consists joining forces with neighbouring countries to fight Boko Haram together.
Buhari sought Germany’s support for Nigeria’s quest to hold a permanent seat in the United Nations.
Buhari said his administration has stopped the Boko Haram from further attacking installations and towns.
The President said it was clear that some officials of the past government shared the money meant for military hardware, therefore forcing soldiers into mutiny.
“It is a pity Boko Haram welcomed you with explosions in Maiduguri that took so many lives, but I have attempted to explain in so many fora that Boko Haram is not what it used to be.
“While they were firmly holding 14 out of 774 local governments when we came in, they are not holding any local government now,” Buhari said.
At the National Assembly complex, the German President warned that the current fight against Boko Haram cannot rout the insurgents, explaining that military might either was not the answer. He visited Saraki when he urged Buhari to provide good governance and ensure the prospect of a better future for citizens.
He assured that Germany will support the government in the ongoing fight against terrorism and corruption in the country.
In his remarks, Saraki urged the German Government and the European Union (EU) to assist Nigeria in eliminating terrorism as well as the resettlement and full integration of IDPs.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sanni Odogh, the Senate President said Gauck’s visit was a practical demonstration of the role the legislature plays in strengthening and advancing democracy in any nation.
Saraki, while welcoming the German President to the National Assembly, said: “Your Excellency’s visit would not only further cement our cordial relations but demonstrates that the international community, and in this case, that Germany, is on the same page with this administration’s stance against terrorism and its attendant insecurity as well as the fight against corruption.
