Super Eagles defender Elderson Echiejile says Monaco were unlucky to have lost 2-1 at home to Ligue 1 relegation battlers Bordeaux who did a double on the Les Douges on Friday.
It was Monaco's first defeat in their last nine games and Echiejile is still confident of a second place Ligue 1 finish despite their five-point gap on third place being cut short to two in the race for one remaining automatic qualifying place for the UEFA Champions League group stage.
"It was a painful loss and the fact that it's the third time Monaco are losing to Bordeaux this season," Echiejile told Completesportsnigeria.com.
"But I'm confident that we will finish second and qualify for the UEFA Champions League next season."
Echiejile also remarked that the Super Eagles ouster from the 2017 AFCON could be a catalyst for the team's performance in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
"We disappointed many and I believe the lesson learnt will help stay stronger as a group when the World Cup qualifier begins," he added.
