- As Man U go top first time in two years
BY JOE APU
It was a rain of goals Saturday in the English Premiership with no less than 33 goals scored in eight games played across England.
The rain of goals saw Manchester United going top of the Premier League for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 to comprehensively leapfrog bitter rivals Manchester City at the top of the table.
Manchester United’s win also saw Wayne Rooney scoring his first goal of the season since April with Memphis Depay and Juan Mata also scoring to give the scoreline a glossy look against Sunderland who defended doggedly for 45 minutes and then conceded in injury-time.
After that, there was never any doubt van Gaal’s side would be able to capitalise fully on the lunchtime drubbing suffered by City at Tottenham.
“It’s going to be difficult to continue but you have a better chance from top-place than last year when we had 13 points from 10 games and had to chase.”
Without doubt, Alexis Sanchez is obviously the hero of Arsenals 5-2 away win to Leicester. Sanchez seemed out of sorts during a run without scoring that extended to eight appearances, this cracker-jack attacker ended the wait with a flurry: a hat-trick to send Arsenal closer to the summit and wipe out the last unbeaten record in the Premier League.
Leicester finally tasted defeat this season, and Claudio Ranieri will not enjoy the irony. The Italian left English football 11 years ago after being sacked by Chelsea, unable to overhaul Arsene Wenger’s Invincibles.
In Liverpool’s five goals thriller, Daniel Sturridge showed what the Reds have been missing as he scored the goals that relieved some of the pressure on Brendan Rodgers.
At the end of what has been a difficult week for the Liverpool manager, one in which Jurgen Klopp and Carlo Ancelotti have been linked to his job, Sturridge showed his class with a double in the second half to give his side a much needed 3-2 win over Aston Villa.
