The Consumer Protection Council has warned retailers of substandard or banned pesticides to desist or be ready to face the wrath of the law.
The Director General of the CPC, Mrs. Dupe Atoki, said this in her address at a workshop organised on responsible use of pesticide for consumer safety in Osogbo on Wednesday.
The DG whose speech was read by the Director, Quality Assurance and Development of CPC, Mr. Emmanuel Amlai, said the agency would not spare anybody caught selling any of the banned chemicals from prosecution.
Atoki said, ” Let me sound a warning to those unscrupulous retailers who engage in the sale of banned and substandard pesticides that my council will ensure that anyone caught in the act will not be spared from the full wrath of the law.”
The CPC boss said the mishandling of pesticide, herbicide and rodenticide had led to death in some cases while some had developed illnesses like cancer and respiratory disease, miscarriage among others.
She appealed to farmers and other users of the chemicals to dispose remnant of the substance and their containers at sites approved for such saying improper disposal could pollute the underground water.
She added, “Consumers are also expected to understand the environment and the consequences of chemicals in order to conserve natural resources and protect the earth for future generation.
“As pesticide users, it is therefore, expected that you recognise standard pesticides even from their labels and packaging and you should use them responsibly to avoid damage to health and the environment.”
