I write to comment on the above captioned subject in The PUNCH of Monday, October 5, 2015.The writer had advised Mr. President to scrap the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.
While supporting the view that an urgent action be taken to sanitise the energy sector, it is my take that as a regulatory authority for the newly unbundled power sector, NERC has a vital role to play in the success of the electricity sub-sector reforms and therefore should be retained. However, the Federal Government must do away with the Board as presently constituted. It may be recalled that NERC Chairman, Dr. Sam Amadi, was alleged to have written the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court to protest against a judge in Lagos who gave an injunction against tariff hike. This Board in the recent past had issued directives to DISCOs on meters, crazy bills, etc which were largely ignored. The Board seems to have its sympathy for DISCOs at the expense of hapless electricity consumers. They should therefore be sent packing.
