I want to be bigger than Tuface –Brain

Twenty-four- year- old Magikal Entertainment artiste, Adeleke Matanmi, popularly known as Brain, tells Saturday Beats about his career

What have you been up to recently?

I have been working; recording and pushing out my music. I just released a new single, Gara, but I am planning to drop another one soon titled, Ileke. The Ileke single is my own way of connecting to the ladies and appreciating their keen support all through the beginning of my sojourn into music.

How would you describe your childhood?

Growing up was fun. I come from a very humble family. My dad and mum tried to give us the best life. We went to the best schools and at present, we are all making them proud in all ramifications.

Barely spending two years as a professional artiste, you were nominated for the NEA and NMVA in 2014. How do you feel about the development?

I am really happy about it and it means, I’m getting due recognition and people are beginning to notice my work. Getting such big nomination is no joke or an easy feat and I thank God for bringing me this far.

Why did you decide to be a musician?

For me, music is a passion and it runs in the blood. My father loves music and plays music whenever he’s around, my brother is a professional dancer and my younger sisters are choristers in the church. I started singing when I was in secondary school. Then I would sing for my classmates and they would let out a cheer for me. In 2005 I recorded my first song. In my first year in school, I went for an event to perform and was denied access to the stage at first but people who had seen me perform requested I must sing. When I performed, it eventually became the high point of the event and from that day on, I never looked back.

What sets you apart from others in the music industry?

I am original and true to myself. My voice texture, the way I rap and sing brings out the uniqueness in me. I am also versatile with my kind of songs; I can even sing reggae and the likes. And I listen to different songs from great personalities like legendary Fela Anikulapo, Evang. Ebenezer Obey, Sir Shina Peters and so many others. With the blend of all of these great musicians, it helps me avoid being stereotypic with my songs. I am signed to Magikal Entertainment with a debut single ‘So Crazy’ and my three videos “Watcha Looking At”, “The Bridge (Tribute to Mandela”) and the new one, “Salute” are on the screen for viewers’ pleasure.

What distinguishes your songs from other young Nigerian acts?

My songs are surely not the regular “noise making” as I sometimes see it. Songs are most times meant to address societal issues or used as a medium to pass out messages. In as much that I want to do the regular party or feel-good songs, I still want to pass out message to young people out there, just like one of my new singles “Take It Easy”, the song addresses the issue of young people wanting to make fast money without working hard.

Who are the big artistes you admire and looking forward to work with?

I have a whole lot but my favourites are Asa, 2face, MI, Sound Sultan, Tiwa Savage, Jesse Jagz just to mention a few. I want to be bigger than Tuface.

You are single?

Sure, I’m single but not ready to mingle because of my music.

So, what’s your choice when it comes to ladies?

I sure love pretty ladies with big backside, the original African beauty.

So how did you come about the stage name Brain?

The name Brain was born out of the fact that I realised that most of the songs we do usually come forth through the brain after series of thinking must have been done. I had earlier decided that whenever I was ready to take music fulltime, I would look for a name that is unique and that was how the name was born. I am also of the view that if your brain defines the music and the music defines you, then the brain defines you automatically.
