Stakeholders decry low ICT usage in tertiary institutions

The Senior Manager, Oracle West and East Africa Operations, Mr. Bukunmi Omidiran, and other stakeholders have called for the use of Information and Communications Technology in tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

The stakeholders included the Vice-Chanellor, Kwara State University, Malete, Prof. AbdulRasheed Na’Allah, and the General Chair, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Dr. Ayodeji Oluwatope.

They spoke during the ninth international conference on ICT applications in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

Omidiran said the use of ICT in Nigerian educational institutions was still at the very nascent stage.

Noting that there were still lots of opportunities for improvement, he said people were just beginning to push the boundaries of the use of ICT in Nigeria.

He also said there was an appreciable use of ICT by some industries such as the banking, advertising, oil and gas and insurance industries.

“There are a lot more that we can do. East Africa is doing better than West Africa particularly Nigeria, so there is a lot we can do such as integrating payment systems in the educational system and having a one-stop system of all university administration with all kinds of services“

Na’Allah said it was imperative to adopt more use of ICT in the tertiary education sector so as to be at par with modern technological and educational trend.

Oluwatope urged greater ICT use and penetration in tertiary institutions in the country.

He stated that the conference was intended to bring to the fore issues in ICT applications to administration such as Cloud Computing, Big Data and Business Intelligence.

He added that it was intended to provide a platform to discuss new trends to aid the management and administration of tertiary institutions in the country.
