Nasarawa State House of Assembly on Monday recommended an indefinite suspension on the Vice Chancellor of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Prof. Muhammad Akaro Mainoma, over alleged admission discrepancy.
It will be recalled that the lawmakers had last week directed the Clerk of the House, Mr. Eggo Maikeffi, to communicate the vice chancellor to appear before the committee of the House to explain the rationale behind 2015/2016 students’ admission.
Announcing the recommendation of the House which came down as indefinite suspension during the preliminary session of the House, the Speaker of the House, Mr. Ibrahim Balarebe Abdullahi, said the punishment would pave the way for thorough investigation.
During the preliminary, the lawmakers said that the vice chancellor had exposed his incompetence to be in the office before the House and therefore should sit aside for an ad hoc committee to be set up and investigate the matter.
Explaining the manner of this year’s admission, Prof. Mainoma said the admission was in the conformity of the university’s guideline of 80/20 percent to indigene and non-indigenes of the state.
On the newly introduced charges of five thousand acceptance fees and four thousand Internet charges, Mainoma said, “It was done to improve the internally generated revenue of the university as well as announce the quarter given to each local government area of the state, which the lawmakers vehemently contested the percentage given to their respective local government areas.”
It was at this junction that Abubakar Oberen Kan, a barrister, representing Kokona West Constituency, moved a motion to that effect.
