Former European champion Gloria Alozie has tipped Oluwatobiloba Amusan, who won the 100m hurdles gold medal for Nigeria at the Brazzaville 2015 All Africa Games, to break her Nigerian record in the event.
Alozie, who switched allegiance to Spain in 2001, set a Nigerian record of 12:44 seconds in 100m hurdles in 1998, which has remained unbroken.
The Spaniard praised Amusan for winning the 100m hurdles All Africa Games gold in 13:11 seconds, adding that if the 18-year-old athlete gets good training, she would break the 17 year-old record.
Alozie said, “When I saw her (Amusan) win gold in 100m hurdles at the All Africa Games, I was very happy. It has really been long time I saw a Nigeria female athlete do so well in 100m hurdles and her time is not bad. I remember I once won the Africa championship in Cameroon with 13:60 seconds.
“Before that African championship I ran 13:96 seconds in Benue. So for her to win with that kind of time; it is very good. Her time is really good. I see great potential in her. I know that with encouragement and good training, she can break my record. She is good.”
Alozie also said there was the need to revive the age-grade athletics competition that existed in the 1980s and 1990s, which served as platforms for discovering athletes across the country.
