Lagos and Delta states on Saturday won the 2015 Victor Ochei Wheelchair Basketball Championships.
While Lagos won the men’s category of the tournament after beating defending champions, Oyo State, 39-34 in the final, Delta won the women’s category after beating Imo State 14-5 in the final. Edo and Oyo States won bronze in the two categories respectively.
The four-day tournament, which is in its fourth edition, featured Oyo, Ogun, Rivers, Kwara, Edo, Delta, Lagos and Imo states.
Remi Basanya of Delta State won the Most Valuable Player’s award in the women’s category, while Lagos State’s Segun Balley won men’s MVP. The players were promised N100, 000 each for their awards.
Sponsor of the tournament, a former speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Victor Ochei, said he would ensure the competition remains an annual event.
“This is currently the only competition that we have for wheelchair basketball in Nigeria,” he said.
“It will be quite an injustice to the players who depend solely on it for their sustenance if we allow it to go down the drain. I believe with more corporate sponsorship and support, we can continue to organise this tournament.”
President of WBFN, Bukola Olopade, said the competition had shown the federation’s commitment to the development of the sport in the country.
