Disu had been talking of his death ─ Brother-in-law

The brother-in-law of late Alhaji Tajudeen Disu, the Managing Director of the Lekki Worldwide Investment Limited, the firm that has been managing investment in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, Pastor Oluwabukunolami Folayan, said the MD had been talking of his death before his tragic killing on Monday.

The in-law, who is a brother of the deceased’s wife, Dr. Folashade Disu, also told our correspondent on Tuesday at the victim’s house on Sinari Adaranijo Street, Victoria Island, that Disu had longed to celebrate his 70th birthday in style.

The pastor said he had cautioned the late Lekki trade zone boss to stop anticipating his death.

Disu was killed in Okunraiye in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos on Monday by some rioters, who stormed the trade zone, claiming the land belonged to the community.

PUNCH Metro had reported that Disu had gone to the site to dialogue with the rampaging villagers, when he was killed.

It was also reported that four residents of the community were killed after policemen securing the area engaged the riotous youths in a gun battle.

The Eletu-Odibo, Lagos Island-born MD, who was said to be in his late 60s, was survived by a wife and three children ─ a female and two males.

The pastor said members of the family were devastated by Disu’s death, adding that he had been trying to calm her sister and her children. He urged that his assailants be fished out and brought to book.

He said, “Alhaji Disu was not just an in-law, but a fantastic brother, who didn’t discriminate. He was so open and accommodating. He had a great sense of humour. He was a philatronphist. I just want to appeal to the government to investigate this incident thoroughly and bring the perpetrators to book.

“When I heard of his death, I was devastated. I didn’t know how to talk to my sister (Disu’s wife). But God has given us the grace. She has accepted it in good faith. We have been using bible passages to console her. She cannot talk to the press now and the children are not available either.”

“He (Disu) was even joking recently that ‘I am going to celebrate when I’m 70.’ He was looking forward to age 70.

“However, he had been talking recently that he might die before his wife. We cautioned him, but who are we when something has been predestined? The burial will likely hold on Wednesday (today).”

While lamenting his death, Disu’s younger brother, Mr. Nasirudeen Disu, said he cared for the plights of others more than his own.

“Alhaji Disu was very loving and hardworking. He studied in America and came to Nigeria to work with the Central Bank of Nigeria. He took care of the family’s needs. His killers need to be eliminated from the society.”

The Chairman, Lekki Free Trade Zone, Mr. Olusegun Jawando, said it was sad that Disu died without completing the free trade zone project that was initiated 10 years ago.

He said, “This situation is very tragic. It should not have happened. We have been working on this project for almost 10 years. We never expected it; we are reaching an accord with the community, so we did not expect such a tragic event. Alhaji Disu was honest and very diligent about this project. He had served his country and paid the supreme price in the line of work. We hope that his soul will rest in peace and that his memory will live on in this project.

“The government should fish out the perpetrators of this act and make sure that security is maintained on the zone. We hope that the state government will move into this situation and try to resolve all the issues.”

Friends and colleagues of the late MD also penned their mood in the condolence register placed on a table on his premises.

One of his colleagues, Mr. Yinka Odunsi, wrote, “We were together at my in-law’s place last Saturday. You left me without saying goodbye. My life will never be the same again without you. You were always there for me Bola. I will dearly miss you. Goodnight my brother and a friend.”

Ibrahim Fashola wrote, “So, so sad! Sleep well uncle. May Allah forgive all your shortcomings.”

“My god is gone,” Jeje Olapeju stated.
