Eagles Rise One Place In FIFA Rankings

eagles3By Nurudeed Obalola: The Super Eagles moved up one place in the latest FIFA rankings which were announced on Thursday, incidentally Nigeria’s Independence Day. The 2013 African champions climbed from 53rd to 52nd, gaining one point from 599 to 600. Nigeria, however, dropped one spot in the African rankings from ninth to 10th. The Super Eagles played two matches in September, the month under review, drawing with Tanzania in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier before defeating neighbours Niger in a friendly. As expected, competitive matches have more value in the rankings than friendlies. Interestingly, Nigeria’s opponents in the October friendlies, Cameroon and Congo, and the Eagles’ AFCON qualifying group rivals Egypt,  are ranked seventh, eighth and ninth in Africa. Cameroon are seventh in Africa and 48th in the world with 640 points, having dropped six places. Congo are eighth in Africa and 49th in the world with 636 points, slipping seven places from the last rankings. Egypt are ninth in Africa and 51st globally with 620 points, also dropping from their last position, although by just two spots.
