The Dean of College of Agriculture, Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Prof. Adio Folayan, has said that the college will contribute about 25 per cent of the internally generated revenue of the university.
Folayan said this during the cultivation of 21 hectares of land, which he said would be for the planting of 10,000 heaps of yam, and 4,000 suckers of plantain, among others.
He added that seven hectares would be for planting of maize, while other sections of the farmland would be for poultry and piggery.
Noting that the college had embarked on a programme entitled, “Operation Feed JABU and Environs”, Folayan said the goal was to teach students entrepreneurship and to demonstrate that agriculture was a goldmine.
The educationist said, “The drive is to provide the agricultural need of JABU community and those of Owena, Ikeji Arakeji, Ipetu and others. Apart from being commercial, the farms will also fulfil the purpose of training and research.
“Various experiment is being carried out by students with the livestock, crops and fisheries with the aim of coming up with new species and increasing harvests. With return on investment rising to about 300 per cent, it is necessary for JABU to contribute its quota towards providing adequate food security for Nigerians.”
Commending the faculty and the dean, the Vice-Chancellor, JABU, Prof. Sola Fajana, said the institution’s claim of being an entrepreneurial university was not just a slogan.
He added, “An average JABU graduate is not only fit for job market but also has the capacity to be an employer of labour. JABU will soon become the source of affordable food stuff.”
