The Cross River State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers on Friday said it would not join the ongoing strike initiated by the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress for some reasons.
The organised labour on Friday commenced indefinite strike to press for payment of salaries of local government workers, teachers, and arrears and allowances of staff of the Cross River University of Technology.
However, the state Chairman of the NUT, Mr. Eyo Nsa-Etim, said in Calabar during a symposium organised by the union that they were not contacted before the strike commenced.
Nsa-Etim, who is also the vice-chairman of NLC in the state, said the NUT was not invited for the meeting where the decision was taken that civil servants should commence strike on October 2.
He said, “For now, we are totally not involved in the strike. We have some programmes at hand, and if we join them in the strike now, we cannot celebrate our world teachers’ day coming up on October 5.
“Also, the state government is trying to solve labour problems. We believe that the government ought to have been given a little time to respond to the issues raised by the NLC and TUC.
“We may join along the way, but I think the present government is still new and deserves some time to put things in order.”
