Ex-Nigeria international, Samuel Oguche, has confirmed to Saturday PUNCH that he would organise a basketball youth camp in Onitsha, Anambra State from November 1 to 4 at the Army Cantonment basketball court.
The camp, sponsored by Bullet energy drink, will be holding in the state for the first time and it will be the first basketball competition in the South East in a very long time.
The Onitsha camp, however, is the third edition of the Oguche/Bullet Basketball Camp for the year 2015.
Oguche said his desire remains to give back to the society by training young players. He said using basketball to educate and develop Nigerian youth is just the beginning of what needs to be accomplished.
“Running the Bullet energy drink camp has become very important because it’s a way; my way own of giving back and encouraging the youth. Along the line in my youthful days, I was helped and encouraged,” Oguche said.
“Many of us didn’t have the chance for camps like this but because we have seen that it is one of the best ways to develop talents, we have chosen to go with it. It has been quite helpful and we will continue to run with it. It is a responsibility for us to inspire them to keep aiming high by providing them opportunities to grow.”
Over 200 boys and girls will receive intense basketball training and the opportunity for scholarship from the camp.
Leading US coaches, including Anthony Gorham Jr. (Washington DC), Lliyas Rahman (Maryland), Gregory Brown (Fort Lauderdale) and Nigeria’s Osita Nwachukwu (Wisconsin), will take part in the camp.
The Nigerian coaches, who would be involved in the camp, are Owoicho Alex, Dosu Mensah (Dodan Warriors, Lagos), Ezinne Briggs (Port Harcourt) and Charles Ibeziake (Raptors Onitsha).
