The members of the Orsu Local Government Association in the United States of America (OLGA-USA) have mapped out elaborate plans aimed at empowering the people of Orsu Local Government Area in Imo State and also bring development nearer to the people, especially the youths, the indigent and socially disadvantaged people including women.
In a communiqué issued at the end of their recent biennial convention held in Columbus, Ohio, USA, and signed by Dr. Ifeanyi Iriele and Professor Osita Afoaku, the President and Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee respectively, the association resolved to partner with the Orsu Local Government and Orsu Zurumee, an association of all the town unions in the local government, to promote the welfare of Orsu people in Nigeria and in Diaspora.
The group will establish a functional E-library in selected secondary schools in the area where students and other readers can visit and download reading materials as its own way of promoting literacy among Orsu LGA residents.
Other projects to be embarked upon by the association include the organization of annual soccer competition for all secondary schools in the area as a way of encouraging youth soccer development and talent discovery. The group will also organize food relief programme for indigent people in the area to alleviate their plights and improve their living conditions. Besides, they are also planning to institute a micro-finance credit scheme for eligible female entrepreneurs in the area to enable them establish income generating businesses of their own.
In addition, the association has expressed its desire to partner with the transitional chairman of Orsu LGA, the leadership of Orsu Zurumee, traditional rulers, Liaison officers from the various autonomous communities in the area to ensure the successful implementation of the laudable empowerment projects.
The group used the occasion to announce that its nest biennial convention will expectedly hold in Bowie, Maryland, USA from July 20-23, 2017 and enjoined all members to be present at the convention as more issues concerning the welfare of Orsu people in particular and the development of Orsu LGA in general will be discussed.
It will be recalled that the OLGA-USA last year organized free medical checks for people in the area as part of its contribution towards better health for Orsu people. It is expected that more of such health interventions will be organized in future.
