Police arrest alleged masterminds of Abuja explosions

The police have arrested two alleged masterminds of the blasts at Nyanya and Kuje, two satellite towns in the Federal Capital Territory that killed 20 people and injured many others on October 2, 2015.

The force said it also foiled another plot by the suspects, Abdulazeez Muhazab (27) and Isiaka Salihu (25) to carry out another bomb attack in the FCT as it recovered from them, 12 home-made explosives concealed in soft drink cans, 28 pieces of electric detonators and huge quantities of explosive materials.

The Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, who announced this to journalists during the monthly strategic police conference, on Tuesday, in Abuja, explained that the suspects who hail from Okene, Kogi State, were assisting police investigations into their broad terror network, noting that they would be tried after investigation.

Arase also said the police had apprehended five of the eight-man gang that participated in the abduction of an elder statesman, Chief Olu Falae.

He named the suspects to include Abubakar Auta, Idris Lawan, Umar Ibrahim, Masahudu Mohammed and Bello Tanu.

The suspects, the IG added, were arrested at their hideouts in Niger, Ekiti and Ondo states respectively.

According to the police boss, items recovered from them included the motorcycle used to transport their victim and N823, 990 cash which was part of the N5m ransom paid to them.

“All the arrested suspects have made confessional statements highlighting the details of the operations and their individual roles; as I address you now, the suspects are being charged to court in Akure, Ondo State,” Arase stated.

The Department of State Services had on Monday paraded two suspects, Babawuro Kato and Abdullahi Usman, who claimed that the abduction of Falae was carried out by a three-man gang, adding that the mastermind, one Dantito, escaped with the money.
