Nigeria is a country that has in its own way, progressed with Joy especially in the music sector. The fast growth of Nigerian music in Nigeria and outside Nigeria has a lot to do with the quality of the sound of modern day Nigerian music. I don’t mean the quality of production, but the actual tune, melody both via instruments and delivery of lyrics. This is what elicits the emotions in the listeners upon first listen and has caused our music to travel as far as it has.
In the late 1990s, a group of young artists started creating a sound in Nigeria that was highly influenced by hiphop; they borrowed a foreign sound and attempted to localize it with the infusion of local instruments and local, relatable lyrics. Luckily for this new school artists, young people everywhere liked their music and were proud enough to sing the easily repeatable choruses out loud and share the music with their friends. Fortunately, around this period a National private Radio Station called Raypower and Private TV station called AIT had just established and with the help of Dayo D1 Adeneye and Kenny Keke Ogungbe, these new artists were given a platform to share their music to most of Nigeria. This helped to spread the sound even more.
As a country in 2016, Music is now one of our major exports. This probably started after Kanye West heard the sound of production from Don Jazzy years ago and signed him to be a producer under his production company. Again, the sound is what drew Kanye West and this is what has helped our music progress beyond our border; we have been able to define a sound that appears to be exportable. Today Davido has signed wordlwide to Sony Music International largely because of his huge fanbase which grew mostly because of the popularity of his music and Wizkid is featured on a #1 song in Itunes America for the same reason. Our sound appears to be very attractive and is beginning to be understood not just within country, but outside the continent. If we have not progressed with joy in the Nigerian music sector; then I am not sure what Progress or Joy Means.
Continue to Progress and make sure you do it with Joy!
